FYR · Φάρος [Pharos]. Lighthouses are sentinels of hope. They are the universal guides for the stranger and the voyager through the dangers of the deep and the darkness. This record is an inspired and bold merging of the elegance and majesty of the harp, with the gritty heritage of the bandoneon, and the anachronistic magic of the tarhu.

This album was realised, and the ensemble consolidated through an Artist-in-Residency on the lighthouse island Sula, Norway, hosted by SulaKultur.

These three master musician friends wanted to see how they could make something of musical significance combining their disparate instruments, varied genres of play, and their individual virtuosic backgrounds.

Once there, it became obvious that the two country’s maritime cultures shared a deep bond and Michalis found that the stories he grew up with in Hellas resonated with those which the Norwegian island’s locals regaled him. Surprisingly, the compositions came easily. The music highlights a sophisticated wefting and weaving of these three rare musical instruments that come from very different corners of the world. And from finding that creative meeting point the result is an enlightening and lively intercultural musical dialogue between seafaring nations.

This album was written and recorded at various poignant locations around the tiny lighthouse island, all with very different atmospheres and sound, in order to catch the essence of the local timbre of those universal stories
